Digital ecosystem utilisation

Currently, only a fraction of the plant protection products applied successfully tackles pests or insects, while the rest unnecessarily pollutes the environment. By utilising data stemming from IoT devices in the field, cloud computing and analytics technologies, this use case timely notifies the farmer to proceed with such activities. The result from synergised parameters such as air humidity, temperature and other weather conditions is a service which increases the total farm productivity, contributing to food security for an increasingly populated world. Furthermore, information tailored to farmers’ individual needs lowers their resource costs through early warnings regarding crucial factors in irrigation. By incorporating innovative traceability technology, this use case is among the first to integrate information from the entire food value chain (from farm to shelf) to a marketplace, offering elaborate value propositions to users. Hence, it significantly improves consumers’ perception of food safety while enabling stakeholders in the agri-food sector to participate in an innovative digital ecosystem.

Specific goals

  • Achieve traceability throughout the entire value chain by incorporating traceability technology developed within the IoF2020 use case Meat Transparency and Traceability;
  • Foster the application of IoT technologies in countries where agri-food economy and employability plays significant role;
  • Enhance and re-use a FIWARE-based data sharing IoT platform;
  • Heterogeneity of technological combinations and testing sites to facilitate uptake;
  • Validate results to reduce plant protection product application and increase irrigation efficiency;
  • Enable data-access for consumers to acquire information about products;
  • Strengthen data sharing within agri-food’s value chain with respect to privacy and security.

Expected results

  • Irrigation water -10%
  • Use of pesticides -10%
  • Increased total factor productivity of farms
  • Reduced costs -10%
  • Improved consumer trust
  • Boosted farm sustainability
  • Strengthened data privacy and security
  • Connected IoT devices <60
