AgriFood Innovation Event: Vertical Farming, Healthy Nutrition & Smart Farming Conference 2019

The AgriFood Innovation Event is a focused business, technology and research platform, bringing together European and global companies from the entire agrifood supply chain (from farmer to enduser, with customers, producers, retailers and researchers). The event will take place on 26 and 27 June, 2019 at Brightlands Campus Greenport Venlo, in a region in which the agri-food business is one of the most productive, sustainable and profitable in the world.

Several conferences are going to take place during the AgriFood Innovation Event.

The Vertical Farming Conference is part of the two-day Agri Food Innovation Event. The continually-growing world populations, the global trends toward urbanisation, climate change and pressure on natural resources are key drivers for policies on global food security. Vertical farming is an innovative methodology for vertical cultivation of agricultural products, which can also realize true zero-mile city food supply.
Vertical farms can be built in new or existing buildings and provide significant benefits in environmental sustainability and human health, minimizing the need for water and nutrients, and eliminating pesticides and fungicides, which are no longer needed.Vertical farming and urban agriculture, if designed and implemented appropriately, could offer sustainable and innovative solutions for improving food security.

The Healthy Nutrition Conference, also taking place on the first day of the AgriFood Innovation Event, brings the food industry, retailers, foodservice providers, government and those working in nutrition, together to enable collaboration and innovation and to support a sustainable healthy nutrition landscape for the future. With a growing and ageing population worldwide, the importance of healthy nutrition is of paramount importance. The impact of technology requires a cross-sector knowledge exchange and cooperation.

The Smart Farming Conference will take place on the second day of the AgriFood Innovation Event. After mechanisation, the introduction of mineral fertiliser and the industrialisation of production processes, connectivity and data management are now set to unleash the next revolution in the history of farming: Smart Farming / Precision agriculture. It has now reached a point where it is not only possible to collect vast quantities of data but also to control different pieces of equipment or monitor individual animals, the Internet of Things. A growing number of farmers are starting to adopt digital technology and data-driven innovations.

The 3D Food Printing Conference is part of the second day of the Agri Food Innovation Event. 3D printing technology will be fundamental to the way people interact with food in the future. Supermarkets are already testing to 3D print customized cakes, caterers / restaurants are offering printed desserts. Some even claim that there will be a 3D food printer in every home soon. However, much research is required to change the hype into reality. Which industries will be influenced by the technology? Which food components can be printed in the near future? And which aspects should be taken into account to ensure safety and maintainability of 3D printed food?
